Changes to free school meals eligibility

Free School Meals – Important Information for Families

We would like to remind parents and carers about Free School Meals (FSM) and encourage all eligible families to apply.

What are Free School Meals?

Free School Meals provide eligible children with a healthy, nutritious meal during the school day at no cost to families. Registering for Free School Meals can also help schools receive additional funding through the Pupil Premium, which is used to support children’s learning, wellbeing and educational opportunities.

Who Can Apply?

Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals if you receive certain benefits, including:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (subject to income limits)
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Working Tax Credit run-on payments

Full eligibility details can be found through Trafford’s Free School Meals service.

Universal Infant Free School Meals

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are automatically entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals, regardless of household income. However, families who receive qualifying benefits should still apply, as this may allow the school to receive valuable additional Pupil Premium funding.

Changes from September 2026

The Government is expanding Free School Meal eligibility from September 2026. All children in households receiving Universal Credit will become eligible for Free School Meals, helping many more families access support.
