PE and Sport Premium

What is PE and Sports Premium?
The government provides funding of £150 million per annum to support primary schools in improving the quality of PE and sport. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is allocated directly to primary school headteachers.

Schools must use this funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. They have the flexibility to decide how best to use this funding to benefit their pupils.

Possible uses for the funding include:

  • A matrix of seasonal sporting activities
  • Implementing Change4Life clubs within the school
  • Providing new sports clubs which offer new challenges for all children
  • Providing CPD opportunities for all members of staff
  • Increasing participation in School Games and competitions
  • Providing high-quality resources for PE and sport
  • Ensuring inclusion so all children can access PE and sport
  • Introducing targeted intervention groups to support pupils working at different levels within the curriculum

Impact will be measured through:

  • Improved pupil progress and attainment in PE, supported by assessment data from both teachers and specialist coaches
  • A broad and balanced extra-curricular offer, with registers demonstrating increased participation across the year
  • Increased staff confidence, knowledge and skills as a result of high-quality CPD and professional development opportunities
  • Greater participation in competitive sport through network events and interschool competitions
  • Enhanced quality of PE teaching through well-maintained and appropriate resources
  • Increased engagement in physical activity through structured lunchtime provision led by trained activity leaders

Sustainability of Improvements
We are committed to ensuring that the impact of the PE and Sport Premium is long-lasting. We achieve this by investing in staff training so that high-quality teaching can be sustained beyond the funding period, embedding a broad and inclusive PE curriculum, and developing systems such as our extra-curricular activity programme and assessment approaches that will continue year-on-year. Resources purchased and structures established will support ongoing provision, ensuring that pupils continue to benefit from high-quality PE and sport in the future.
