At Elmridge Primary School, our PSHE curriculum aims to develop healthy, respectful and responsible citizens who are prepared for life in modern Britain and the wider world. Through a whole-school approach, children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to manage their lives, build positive relationships and contribute positively to society.
PSHE supports pupils in developing confidence, resilience, empathy and self-awareness whilst fostering an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within a diverse society. Children are encouraged to celebrate difference, respect others and make informed choices that support their physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
Our curriculum supports our ambitions of developing Confident Communicators, International Learners and Aspirational Leaders. Through meaningful discussion, reflection and collaboration, pupils learn to articulate their views, consider different perspectives and become active members of their communities.
Reflecting our values of Challenge, Care and Collaboration, PSHE equips all children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to thrive both now and in the future.
PSHE is taught weekly across the school through the SCARF programme (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship), which provides a progressive, values-based curriculum from Nursery to Year 6. The curriculum has been adapted in consultation with stakeholders and parents to reflect the needs, values and priorities of Elmridge Primary School.
Learning is organised through six key themes: Me and My Relationships, Being My Best, Valuing Difference, Keeping Myself Safe, Rights and Responsibilities and Growing and Changing. These themes are revisited throughout children’s time in school, allowing knowledge and skills to build progressively through a spiral curriculum.
PSHE is delivered through dedicated lessons, collective worship, themed events and wider school experiences. Learning is responsive to the needs of individual cohorts and is adapted where necessary to support safeguarding, wellbeing and children’s social and emotional development.
Subject-specific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to enable pupils to discuss emotions, relationships, wellbeing, diversity and citizenship with increasing confidence and accuracy. Through discussion, debate, reflection and collaborative learning opportunities, children develop as confident communicators who can express their views respectfully and consider the perspectives of others.
Children are encouraged to reflect, justify opinions, solve problems and apply their learning to real-life situations, helping them develop as thoughtful, responsible and active citizens. Learning is enriched through assemblies, wellbeing events, anti-bullying initiatives, pupil leadership opportunities such as School Parliament, charity work, educational visits and participation in whole-school and community projects.
Assessment is used to monitor progress and inform future learning. Teachers use ongoing assessment, end-of-unit quizzes, pupil discussion and reflection opportunities to evaluate children’s understanding and identify next steps.
Adaptive teaching strategies ensure all pupils can access ambitious learning. Lessons are carefully scaffolded and adapted where necessary so that every child can participate fully whilst maintaining high expectations for all learners.
At Elmridge, we are committed to developing healthy, confident and responsible individuals who are prepared for life both now and in the future. Through a progressive and inclusive PSHE curriculum, children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to make positive choices, build healthy relationships and contribute positively to society.
