Intent

At Elmridge Primary School, our intent is to provide an ambitious, inclusive and enriching education that enables every child to unlock their potential, build resilience and celebrate diversity. Guided by our motto, Growing Together, and rooted in our values of Challenge, Care and Collaboration, we strive to create a curriculum that inspires curiosity, develops confidence and prepares children to thrive in an ever-changing world.

We believe that every child deserves access to a broad, knowledge-rich curriculum that is carefully designed to ensure progression, deepen understanding and foster a lifelong love of learning. Our curriculum is continually reviewed and refined to remain relevant, engaging and purposeful, ensuring that all children, regardless of background or starting point, can succeed and flourish. Through high expectations, explicit teaching, strong pastoral support and meaningful opportunities for enrichment, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and character needed for future success.

Our curriculum is underpinned by a commitment to personal development, pupil well-being and inclusion. We nurture resilience, independence and self-belief so that children feel safe, valued and empowered to challenge themselves. Through a rich range of experiences, leadership opportunities, trips, performances, clubs and community engagement, we ensure pupils develop not only academically, but socially, emotionally and culturally.

Our Curriculum Ambitions

Confident Communicators

We aspire for all children to become articulate, thoughtful and expressive communicators who can speak, read and write with confidence across a range of contexts. Through rich vocabulary development, high-quality texts, meaningful discussion and purposeful opportunities to present ideas, pupils learn to communicate clearly and respectfully. We foster a love of reading and language that broadens children’s experiences, deepens understanding and inspires imagination, while building the confidence to contribute positively within school and beyond.

International Learners

We want our pupils to develop a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and recognise the importance of empathy, respect and inclusion. Through a curriculum that celebrates different cultures, perspectives and experiences, children learn to value diversity and appreciate their role within local, national and global communities. We encourage pupils to think critically about the world, engage with wider issues and develop the knowledge and compassion needed to become responsible global citizens.

Aspirational Leaders

We aim to nurture children who are resilient, reflective and motivated to achieve their very best. Through high expectations, positive relationships and opportunities to lead, collaborate and contribute, pupils develop the confidence and character to make a difference. Our curriculum promotes independence, responsibility and teamwork, encouraging children to challenge themselves academically and personally while caring for others and supporting their community.

Preparation for the Future

We strive to equip every child with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to flourish in modern Britain and beyond. By ensuring strong foundations, promoting critical thinking and encouraging creativity and problem solving, we prepare pupils for the next stage of education and future opportunities. Our curriculum develops adaptable, confident and compassionate young people who leave Elmridge ready to embrace challenge, pursue their ambitions and make a positive contribution to society.

Through our curriculum, we intend to create a nurturing and ambitious learning community where every child can flourish. By placing our vision of Unlocking Potential, Building Resilience, Celebrating Diversity at the heart of all we do, we ensure that pupils leave Elmridge as confident, caring and capable individuals who are truly Growing Together.

Implementation

At Elmridge, we are committed to translating our vision into meaningful action through a carefully designed curriculum and a culture built upon Challenge, Care and Collaboration. Through high expectations, strong relationships and a consistent approach to teaching and learning, we create an environment where every child feels safe, valued and empowered to succeed.

Our curriculum is implemented through clear progression, purposeful experiences and expert teaching that enable children to develop secure knowledge, strong learning behaviours and confidence in themselves as learners. We recognise that children learn best when they feel supported, inspired and challenged, and therefore place equal importance on academic achievement, personal development and emotional well-being.

A Consistent and Ambitious Approach to Teaching and Learning

Teaching across Elmridge is rooted in high expectations and a shared understanding of effective pedagogy. Through our Power Learning approach and explicit instruction model, children are supported to become active, reflective and independent learners. Consistent routines, modelling, questioning, guided practice and opportunities for collaboration ensure pupils are fully engaged in learning and understand what success looks like.

Staff use ongoing assessment to identify misconceptions, adapt teaching and provide timely support so that all children, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, can achieve success within the full curriculum. Retrieval practice, purposeful revisiting of prior learning and carefully sequenced knowledge ensure learning is retained and built upon over time.

A Broad, Knowledge-Rich and Inclusive Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide children with a rich body of knowledge alongside opportunities to apply, explore and deepen their understanding. Learning is sequenced progressively from the Early Years to Year 6 so that pupils develop secure foundations before moving towards increasingly complex concepts and ideas.

High-quality texts, meaningful vocabulary development and purposeful discussion are woven throughout the curriculum to strengthen children’s communication skills and foster a love of reading and learning. Across all subjects, children are encouraged to think critically, explain their reasoning and make connections between areas of learning.

Adaptive teaching strategies ensure learning is accessible and ambitious for all pupils. Staff carefully consider the needs of individuals and provide appropriate scaffolds, support and challenge so every child can participate fully and experience success.

Personal Development and Positive Relationships

Positive relationships are central to life at Elmridge. We foster a nurturing environment where children feel respected, listened to and supported to regulate their emotions and behaviour successfully. Through our Zones of Regulation approach and consistent pastoral support, pupils develop emotional literacy, resilience and self-awareness.

Our curriculum promotes personal growth by providing children with opportunities to lead, collaborate and contribute to school life. Roles such as ambassadors, School Parliament representatives and wider pupil leadership opportunities enable children to develop responsibility, confidence and a sense of belonging within the school community.

We actively promote equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring children understand the importance of kindness, empathy and respect for others. Through meaningful discussion and curriculum content, pupils learn to appreciate different perspectives and celebrate the diverse world around them.

Enrichment and Cultural Capital

We believe learning should extend beyond the classroom and provide children with memorable experiences that broaden horizons and inspire ambition. Educational visits, performances, competitions, clubs, visitors and outdoor learning opportunities enrich the curriculum and allow pupils to apply their learning in meaningful contexts.

Children are encouraged to develop their talents and interests through a wide range of experiences in sport, the arts, science, technology and leadership. These opportunities help pupils build confidence, discover new aspirations and develop the cultural capital needed to thrive in modern Britain and beyond.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing

The safety and wellbeing of every child underpin all aspects of school life. Safeguarding is embedded within our curriculum and culture, ensuring children understand how to stay safe, healthy and respectful both online and offline.

We prioritise emotional wellbeing and mental health through dedicated pastoral support, wellbeing initiatives and opportunities for children to develop positive relationships and healthy lifestyles. By creating a secure and caring environment, we enable children to flourish both academically and personally as they grow together through their journey at Elmridge.

Impact

At Elmridge, the impact of our curriculum is reflected in the knowledge, character and aspirations of our pupils. Through our commitment to unlocking potential, building resilience and celebrating diversity, children leave our school as confident, caring and capable individuals who are fully prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond the classroom.

Our pupils develop into confident communicators who can articulate their ideas clearly, think critically and engage positively with others. They demonstrate curiosity, independence and resilience in their learning, approaching challenge with confidence and perseverance. Children understand the importance of collaboration, respect and empathy, and contribute positively to the school community and the wider world around them.

The impact of our curriculum is seen not only in academic outcomes, but also in pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and attitudes towards learning. Children feel safe, valued and supported at Elmridge, enabling them to thrive both academically and emotionally. They develop strong learning behaviours, positive relationships and the confidence to express themselves, take risks in their learning and celebrate both their own successes and those of others.

Our broad and ambitious curriculum ensures pupils acquire secure knowledge and skills across all subjects while developing the cultural capital needed to succeed in modern Britain. Through enrichment opportunities, leadership roles, educational visits, performances, competitions and wider experiences, children broaden their horizons, discover new interests and develop aspirations for the future.

Our quality of education is ambitious and highly effective. Pupils achieve high standards across the curriculum and make strong progress from their individual starting points. Through carefully sequenced learning, high-quality teaching and consistently high expectations, many children attain outcomes that are above national expectations. Children develop secure knowledge, confidence and fluency in their learning, enabling them to apply their understanding successfully across a range of subjects and contexts.

Pupils demonstrate high standards of behaviour and conduct across all areas of school life. Through our consistent expectations, pastoral support and Power Learning approach, children understand how to learn effectively, regulate their emotions and make responsible choices. They show care for themselves and others and embody our values of Challenge, Care and Collaboration in both their actions and attitudes.

Children, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, achieve well from their individual starting points because teaching is responsive, inclusive and ambitious. Staff use assessment purposefully to identify next steps, address misconceptions and ensure all pupils can access and succeed within the full curriculum.

We evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum through a wide range of evidence, including:

  • Internal assessment and progress information
  • Pupil voice and learning conversations
  • Work scrutiny and curriculum reviews
  • Lesson visits and monitoring activities
  • Behaviour, attendance and safeguarding information
  • External moderation and trust reviews
  • National performance data and statutory assessments
  • Feedback from parents, carers and the wider school community

This continuous cycle of reflection and improvement ensures our curriculum remains ambitious, relevant and responsive to the needs of our pupils. Ultimately, the impact of our curriculum is measured by the children themselves: resilient learners, respectful citizens and aspirational young people who leave Elmridge ready for the next stage of their education and prepared to make a positive contribution to the world around them.
