Intent

At Elmridge, we are committed to preparing pupils to become thoughtful, respectful and active citizens who are ready to contribute positively to life in modern Britain. Through our school vision of unlocking potential, building resilience and celebrating diversity, we aim to develop children who understand the importance of democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect, tolerance and the rule of law. Our curriculum and wider school culture are designed to nurture International Learners who value diversity, make responsible choices and understand their role within both the local and global community. We strive to ensure all pupils develop the knowledge, understanding and character needed to engage respectfully with others and uphold the values that underpin an inclusive and democratic society.

Implementation

British Values are woven throughout both our taught curriculum and the wider life of the school. Explicit links are embedded within our PSHE curriculum through our use of the SCARF programme, whilst weekly Picture News assemblies provide regular opportunities for pupils to engage with current affairs and real-world issues. Half-termly assemblies, Religious Education lessons and key events such as Anti-Bullying Week, Remembrance Day and World Parliament Day further deepen pupils’ understanding of these concepts.

Pupil voice and democratic participation are central to school life. Leadership opportunities, including School Parliament, Pupil Leadership Team and a wide range of ambassador roles, allow children to actively contribute to school improvement and experience democratic processes through elected positions. Our Behaviour and Positive Relationships Policy places restorative conversations at its heart, supporting pupils to take responsibility for their actions, reflect on choices and develop respectful relationships with others.

Our commitment to celebrating diversity is reflected through our curriculum design, which intentionally includes diverse texts, authors, historical perspectives and opportunities to explore different cultures and communities. Events such as European Day of Languages, World Heritage Day and the celebration of a range of religious festivals help pupils develop appreciation, tolerance and respect for the diverse world around them.

Impact

As a result, pupils at Elmridge develop a secure understanding of British Values and can confidently articulate what it means to be respectful, responsible and active members of society. Children demonstrate positive relationships with peers and adults, show respect for differing viewpoints and understand the importance of equality, fairness and inclusion.

Pupils actively engage in leadership opportunities and understand that their voice matters within a democratic community. Through carefully planned curriculum experiences and a strong school culture, children develop the confidence to make positive choices, contribute meaningfully to school life and show genuine appreciation for the diverse world in which they live. This is reflected in positive pupil voice, strong conduct across school and educational visits, high levels of participation in leadership roles and a culture where diversity is celebrated and every individual is valued.
